About

The International Congress on Nitrogen Fixation (ICNF) is a premier international scientific forum dedicated to advancing research in Biological Nitrogen Fixation (BNF) and its applications, highlighting cutting-edge advances in nitrogen fixation research.

Established in 1974 at Washington State University, Pullman, USA, the ICNF has maintained a biennial periodicity, serving as a critical platform for disseminating fundamental and applied scientific knowledge.

Since its inception, the ICNF has been instrumental in convening researchers, educators, and industry experts globally to address advancements across disciplines, including microbiology, plant biology, biochemistry, and environmental sciences. This sustained function has cemented the ICNF's position as a benchmark event for scientific and technological breakthroughs in BNF.

The biological conversion of atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia by symbiotic and free-living microorganisms is a cornerstone of sustainable agriculture. It offers an ecologically sound alternative to industrial nitrogen fertilization, which is energy-intensive and contributes to greenhouse gas emissions.

The return of the ICNF to Brazil in 2026, hosted in Foz do Iguaçu, Paraná, underscores the country's commitment to BNF research and its critical role in climate change mitigation.
